Quick summary: Pidgin streams your speech to third-party services for real-time transcription and translation. We do not record, store, or retain any of your audio, transcriptions, or translations — on our servers or anywhere else.

1. Who We Are

Pidgin ("we," "us," "our") is a live speech translation mobile application available on iOS and Android. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, and protect your information when you use Pidgin.

2. Information We Collect

2.1 Account Information

When you create an account, we may collect:

Anonymous accounts: A randomly generated user identifier only. No personal information is required.
Google Sign-In: Your name, email address, and Google account identifier.
Apple Sign-In: Your name (if provided), email address (or Apple's private relay email), and Apple account identifier.

2.2 Audio and Speech Data

We do not record, store, or retain your audio in any form. When you use live translation, your device's microphone captures audio and streams it directly to third-party transcription providers in real time. The audio is processed transiently by these providers to generate text and is never saved to our servers, databases, or any other storage. Transcribed text and translations exist only in your device's memory during an active session and are discarded when the session ends.

2.3 Usage Data

We track the following to manage your subscription and enforce usage limits:

Total minutes of translation used per billing period
Session timestamps (start and end)
Subscription status and plan type

2.4 Device Information

We generate and store a persistent device identifier on your device. This identifier is used solely to enforce free-tier usage limits and prevent abuse. It does not contain personal information and cannot be used to identify you outside of our service.

2.5 Language Preferences

We store your selected source and target language preferences locally on your device to improve your experience.

3. Third-Party Services

Pidgin relies on third-party services to provide transcription, translation, and other functionality. When you use Pidgin, your data may be processed by the following providers:

We also operate a self-hosted translation server that runs local translation models on our own infrastructure. When this service is used, your transcribed text is processed in real time and is not stored or shared with any third party.

We use the information we collect to:

Provide real-time speech transcription and translation
Authenticate your account and manage your session
Track usage against your subscription limits

5. Data Storage and Security

Your account credentials and session tokens are stored securely on your device using platform-native secure storage (iOS Keychain / Android EncryptedSharedPreferences). Usage data is stored locally on your device and periodically synced to our cloud database over encrypted connections (TLS/HTTPS).

We do not sell, rent, or share your personal information with third parties for marketing purposes.

6. Data Retention

Audio data: Never recorded or retained by us. Streamed directly to transcription providers in real time and immediately discarded.
Transcribed and translated text: Not retained anywhere. Exists only in your device's memory during an active session and is cleared when the session ends.
Account and usage data: Retained for the duration of your account. Permanently deleted upon account deletion.

7. Your Rights and Choices

You may exercise the following rights at any time:

Delete your account: Available in Settings within the app. This permanently deletes your account and all associated data from our servers.
Manage notifications: You can enable or disable local notifications in the app's Settings or through your device's system settings.
Withdraw consent: You can stop using the microphone at any time by ending your translation session or revoking microphone permission in your device settings.
Data access: Contact us to request a copy of your personal data.

8. Children's Privacy

Pidgin is not directed to children under the age of 13 (or the applicable age in your jurisdiction). We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us and we will delete it.

9. International Data Transfers

Your data may be processed in countries other than your own, as our third-party providers operate globally. By using Pidgin, you consent to the transfer of your information to these jurisdictions, which may have different data protection laws than your country of residence.

10. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. If we make material changes, we will notify you through the app or by updating the effective date at the top of this page. Your continued use of Pidgin after any changes constitutes your acceptance of the updated policy.
